It's the Press' Fault!
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:29 PM
Shame on the press -- at least to hear Barack Obama tell it.  Judging from his slightly petulant statement announcing his departure from Trinity UCC, the break isn't because of the dubious views of those who have been occupying its pulpit, both as long-serving pastors and guests.  The substance of what's issued from the church isn't an issue for Barack.  Rather, all the press' fault, for two reasons:

(1) The Press' Penchant for Unjust Imputations:

Every time something is said in the church by anyone associated with Trinity, including guest pastors, the remarks will be imputed to me even if they totally conflict with my long-held views, statements and principles.

Well, if the remarks are of the tenor of those so famously discharged by Jeremiah Wright, that's probably true.  Nor is it unfair, given that Wright (described by Barack as a spiritual mentor and something akin to a family member) spewed racial hatred for twenty years from the pulpit unrebuked (or if we are to believe Obama, unnoticed) by him.

What's more, it's difficult to understand why Barack feels so aggrieved by such imputations -- given John McCain has been blasted (to the point where he'd have to make statements rejecting them) simply for accepting the endorsement of pastors who are as controversial as Wright, but on the other side of the aisle.  And those are men McCain barely knows, and whose views obviously "totally conflict with [McCain's] long-held views, statements and princples" -- and not people McCain embraced as family for two decades.

In fact, if one were to make comparisons, imagine the uproar if McCain still found a way to commend his controversial pastoral endorsers the way Barack managed to compliment both Wright and Father Pfleger in passing.  He noted that he "continue[s] to admire the work Reverend Wright has done in building up the church"; as for Father Pfleger, according to Barack, he's "someone I knew, who [sic] I consider a friend, who has done tremendous work in the city of Chicago."

(2) The Press' Bad Behavior

Barack's condemnation of the press' behavior seemed more genuinely heated than any criticism he's offered of the pastors.  He essentially charged the press with forcing him to leave Trinity for the sake of its other parishioners:

We've had news organizations harassing members at their homes and their workplaces, we've had reporters grabbing church bulletins and calling up the sick and the shut-in in an attempt to get news about the church, we've had news organizations scrutining Reverend Moss' sermons and attempting to try to make political hay out of even the most innocuous or innocent remarks by him.

For someone who's received such unbelievably favorable press coverage, he's remarkably willing to turn on the MSM, isn't he?  Nobody in the media had better cherish any hopes that a President Obama will embrace the press a la JFK.   In fact, as I noted here back in February, Barack is perfectly capable of stiff-arming the group of people who will have been more responsible than anyone for getting him to The White House.

Here's Exhibit A.

Notes from Obama's Presser
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 8:41 PM
Just filed a story about Obama's presser from South Dakota to answer questions about his decision to resign from TUCC. Will link when it's up. Here's some of Obama's key quotations I transcribed from the conference.

- “We don’t want to have to answer for everything that’s stated in that church."
-“I did not anticipate my fairly conventional Christian faith being subject to such challenge and such scrutiny."
- Obama's quitting the church, but not denouncing it. “It’s not a church worthy of denouncing,” he said.  Obama said his critics “they’ve seen caricatures of the church and accept those caricatures despite my insistence that’s not what the church is about and there’s not much I can do about it."

DNC Votes
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 6:38 PM
Summary: Hillary doesn't get what she wants. DNC agrees to seat all of Michigan and Florida's delegates with half a vote each. She wanted them all. In the case of Michigan, 69 delegates are allocated to Clinton, 59 to Obama. Unhappy with the decision, the Clinton campaign is threatening to take the decision to the DNC Credentials Committee, implying she will take the fight to the Democratic Convention in August. (The nuclear option.)

The total number of delegates needed to achieve the Democratic nomination for president is now higher. Instead of 2,026, as it has been, the number is now 2,118. There are three primaries left. By CNN's count Obama is 68 delegates away from getting the nomination

This was the play by play:

6:40pm:The Democratic National Committee denies Hillary Clinton the full number of delegates with full voting rights from Florida. 12 members of the 30-member committee voted in favor of granting her all the delegates, 15 voted against. The motion fails. "Denver! Denver! Denver!"protesters are yelling. "Count all the votes!"

Clinton supporter Alice Huffman, who pushed for a full Florida count, is asking them to "Please, do not do what they expect you to do," meaning don't go nuts in front of the media. "Please conduct yourselves like proper men and women and understand we must compromise," she lectures. They don't.

6:46pm: Vote to seat all Florida delegates with 1/2 vote each. (The compromise vote). 27 members vote in favor. It passes.

6:52pm: Michigan is up. The Michigan Democratic Party issues the first motion to seat all Michigan delegates with 1/2 vote each but reallocate the delegates so Clinton gets 69 and Obama gets 59.

Clinton strategist Harold Ickes looks positively beaten down. Hair is disheveled and he isn't hiding his disdain for the process. "This motion will hijack, hijack, remove four delegates one by Hillary Clinton and most importantly reflect the preferences of six hundred thousand Michigan voters," he fumes. "This body of 30 individuals has decided they are going to substitute their judgment for six hundred thousand voters...I am stunned we have the gall and the chutzpuh to subsititue our judgment for six hundred thousand voters."

Now he delivers Hillary's threat: "There has been a lot of talk about party unity. Let's all come together, wrap our arms around one another. I submit to you gentleman that hijacking four delegates not withstanding [can't keep up with the transcript here] this is not a good way to start down the path of party unity." Then he drops the bomb. He says Clinton asked him to reserve the campaign's rights to take the issue to the DNC credentials committee in July.

7:08:
19 members vote in favor of the Michigan motion. 8 vote against. The Michigan motion passes. Four delegates are "hijacked" as Ickes says. The party officials are asking security to bar the doors. Protesters are going nuts.

The meeting is over.

Outside the DNC Meeting
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 5:37 PM
The Democratic National Committee's meeting to determine whether or not Florida and Michigan delegates will be seated is predictably running far behind schedule.

Opening arguments were scheduled to end at 12pm, but did not close until after 3 pm. They took a lunch break and were supposed to reconvene at 4:15. Haven't resumed yet though. It is assumed negotiations are behind conducted behind closed doors away from the television cameras.

Throughout the day Hillary Clinton's supporters protested the meeting urging the DNC members to count all of Hillary's delegates from Michigan and Florida. I went up to see the ruckus and it was literally raining on Hillary's parade. Heavy, humid rains swept through leafy Woodley Park that afternoon soaking Hillary's supporters. Many of them left the "high visibility area" to take refuge in nearby hotels and restaurants. There were probably only 30 or 40 protesters (mostly older, white women) who withstood the rain and remained in the designated "high visibility" area in front of the Marriot Wardman Park Hotel.

Here are some photos I took. My apologies, I shrunk the first one too much. (And it was my favorite pic, too!) The woman's sign says "I switched to FOX."

Another Racist Anti-Hillary Sermon at Obama's Church
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 9:16 AM
Did you see this one yet?

Rev. Michael Pfleger was invited to preach at Barack Obama's church and used the occasion to deliver a racially-tinged sermon to expose what Hillary's "white entitlement."Like Obama's controversial former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Pfleger is also one of Obama's longtime Chicago friends and political supporters.

“When Hillary was crying, and people said that was put on — I really don’t believe it was put on,” said Father Pfleger. “I really believe that she just always thought: ‘This is mine. I’m Bill’s wife, I’m white and this is mine. I just got to get up and step into the plate.’ And then, out of nowhere, came, ‘Hey, I’m Barack Obama.’ And she said, ‘Oh, damn. Where did you come from? I’m white. I’m entitled. There’s a black man stealing my show."

After the sermon was made public Cardinal Francis George of the Archdiocese of Chicago issued a statement that said:
"The Catholic Church does not endorse political candidates.  Consequently, while a priest must speak to political issues that are also moral, he may not endorse candidates nor engage in partisan campaigning.Racial issues are both political and moral and are also highly charged. Words can be differently interpreted, but Fr. Pfleger’s remarks about Senator Clinton are both partisan and amount to a personal attack.  I regret that deeply. To avoid months of turmoil in the church, Fr. Pfleger has promised me that he will not enter into campaigning, will not publicly mention any candidate by name and will abide by the discipline common to all catholic priests."
Obama has said he is "deeply  disappointed" with Pfleger and called the offensive remarks "backward-looking."

The Looming Tower's Lawrence Wright On Iraq, Andrew McCarthy On Jihadists Within the U.S.
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 9:13 AM
The transcript of my conversation with Lawrence Wright from yesterday is here.  The podcast is here.  More than 90% of it is devoted to the ideological battles splitting al Qaeda today which are the focus of Wright's latest New Yorker article, "The Rebellion Within."  Near the conclusion of our conversation, I asked Wright about the battle for Iraq:

HH: I want to thank Lawrence Wright for spending this much time with us again, the author of The Looming Tower has a brand new article in the June 2, 2008, New Yorker, which I very much recommend to you. It is called The Rebellion Within. I’ve linked it at Hughhewitt.com. Lawrence Wright, I want to finish by talking about Iraq. Obviously, there’s word out of Mosul this week that even though there are some suicide bombings, that al Qaeda has lost its very last stronghold after a series of devastating blows between the United States military and the Iraqi Security Forces, and they’ve put up on some of their websites basic hand-wringing over how did we lose Iraq, et cetera. How important is it to the destruction of radical jihadism that Iraq be stabilized, and become sort of that emblematic, if not a democracy, at least a non-repressive, I don’t know, alternative to either Mubarak or Syrian strong men, or Saudi Arabian absolutism and monarchists? How important is Iraq now?

LW: Well, you know, there are two really important intellectual centers in the Arab world. One is Egypt, the other is Iraq. And the idea behind the invasion of Iraq, which I was opposed to, was to set up this model democracy that would then become a beacon for reform all over the region. It’s going to be really hard to achieve the goal that we had set out, although now, I am in the awkward political position of being opposed to withdrawing. I think we should stay there as long as we can to try to hold this entity together until they are able to remain stable, create a fairly reliable electoral process, police force, and that kind of thing, and take care of themselves. I don’t know if we can achieve that, but it’s hopeful to see that Iraq has been, you know, I don’t want to say that they’ve been put to death completely in Iraq, but they certainly are in retreat. And that’s critical, because if al Qaeda won in Iraq, who knows how far it would go.

Somebody please send this to Senator Obama.

Off to tape a C-SPAN interview with Andrew McCarthy on his new book, Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad.  I am not sure when our conversation will air, but the book is a powerful account not only of the early stages of jihadist conspiracy in the U.S., but also of the limits of the prosecutorial model the U.S. used between the time of the first bombing of the World Trade Center and 9/11.  It is a fascinating must-read for anyone concerned with domestic security.

Bill Clinton's Wrath
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 9:07 AM
Politico.com has a fascinating story on the anger of Bill Clinton.  It begins:

With Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign on the verge of defeat, Bill Clinton has been placing blame on enemies including a brazenly biased media that tried to suppress blue-collar votes, a powerful anti-war group that endorsed rival Barack Obama and weak-willed party leaders unable to stand up to either of these nefarious forces.

With many decades left before him, expect Bill to nurture his grudges and act on them.

What will fascinate is his and Hillary's conduct between now and November.  Will he and she undermine the already troubled Obama candidacy, having concluded that four years of McCain and a return to the White House in 2013 is to be preferred to eclipse at the hands of a rookie and his band of radical friends and backers?

If the DNC Rules Committee does other than either seat all of the Michigan and Florida delegates or punt, its anti-Clinton members will go on to the payback list.  Better for some, surely, to punt to the Credentials Committee and get out of the middle of the Clinton-Obama wars.

Ollie North Endorses in Bitter VA GOP Race
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:36 PM
Tomorrow at the Virginia GOP Convention, current Chairman John Hager (Jenna Bush's father-in-law) will attempt to fight off a challege from a young conservative state senator delegate named Jeff Frederick.

Conservative leaders are rallying to Hager.  In fact, I just received this last-minute email from the Hager forces:
"Conservative icon Ollie North has joined the  Hager team sending an important letter endorsing John Hager.   Conservatives in Virginia know that Ollie North stands firm on his principles and won't allow his friends to be attacked and maligned without standing to defend them.

Ollie North joins a long and growing list of movement conservatives, such as Morton Blackwell, Paul Weyrich and David Keene, who are all supporting John Hager for Chairman."

... Of course, a Hager defeat will be portrayed by liberals as further proof that George W. Bush has lost is clout -- even among Republicans -- even in Virginia.

Frederick has a real shot at ousting Hager -- but it has nothing to do with Bush's popularity (or lack thereof).  If Frederick wins, it will be because he has out-performed Hager.  Because it is a convention, Frederick will need to "turn-out" folks who don't normally attend such events.  An energetic campaigner, Frederick just might have the juice to pull it off.

Rest assured, if Jenna Bush's father-in-law is ousted, it will be an embarrasment that makes the national news.  Stay tuned ...

Pitty for Scott, Advice for McCain ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:05 PM
Two must-read's up on the WSJ ...

... First, Peggy Noonan (sort of) takes it easy on Scott McClellan.  She is, at least, somewhat sympathetic to him -- which makes her a member of a very elite group.  Here's the money quote:

"When I finished the book I came out not admiring Mr. McClellan or liking him but, in terms of the larger arguments, believing him."
... Second, Kimberley Strassel has terrific advice for John McCainHere's an excerpt:
"With Congress's approval rating at record lows, the time is ripe for a slam campaign. Barack Obama won't do it, since his Democratic colleagues are running the joint. But it's a huge opportunity for Mr. McCain, who could play Congress's failings off his promises for reform. Even as Republicans sagely warn their nominee to distance himself from the president, they're beginning to see that his more productive option might just be to throw them – and Congressional Democrats – under the Straight Talk bus.

Mr. McCain could take encouragement from history. Harry Truman managed a 1948 victory by trashing the "Do Nothing Congress." Upstart Barry Goldwater in 1952 told Arizonans that Majority Leader Ernest McFarland represented the mess in Washington, and snatched the Democrat's seat. Tom Daschle followed McFarland, after being pilloried for turning the Senate into a dead zone."
